The Difference Between Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels

microdermabrasion-delawareKnowing the difference between microdermabrasion and chemical peels can be tricky for most people who have not visited an aesthetician. Yes, they both lead to softer, smoother skin, but if they give the same results, why offer both? While both can improve the appearance of your skin, there are actually significant differences in what each treatment offers as well as what patients can usually expect after a visit to one of our Delaware aestheticians. Learn whether microdermabrasion or a chemical peel can help you achieve the youthful results you desire.

What is Microdermabrasion:
There are two types of microdermabrasion: One treatment method uses a wand that sprays the skin with tiny crystals to gently remove the surface layer of skin. The wand also contains a vacuum that removes any loose crystals or skin during the procedure. The second treatment method uses a wand that is diamond-tipped and does not eject crystals. Using the tip of the wand the aesthetician gently scrubs off the surface layer of skin, exposing the smoother, healthier layer below.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion:
The effects of microdermabrasion can last almost a month and many patients leave our Delaware surgical spa center with smoother skin. Patients may notice:

  • Less scaring from acne
  • Fewer fine lines
  • Younger looking and feeling skin
  • Fewer skin imperfections.

What is a Chemical Peel:
Unlike microdermabrasion, which uses crystals to exfoliate the skin, chemical peels use select chemicals to help remove damaged outer layers of the skin. A cosmetic practitioner will wash the skin and then apply the peel to clean skin. At Juve Surgical we offer three different peels: Alphahydroxy acid for removing rough facial skin and treating acne, trichloroacetic acid for removing fine wrinkles, or phenol peels for deeper wrinkles, blotches, or treating pre-cancerous growths.

Benefits of Chemical Peels:
Depending on which chemical peel you select, the results can be long lasting and can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of your face. Patients may experience:

  • Dramatic reduction in wrinkles
  • Softening of acne scarring
  • More even facial coloration
  • Younger looking skin
  • Softer feeling skin

Selecting which treatment option depends on which results you are seeking. Microdermabrasion may be best for skin care maintenance, while a chemical peel can be used for more dramatic, longer-lasting results.
